Background of the Study

Economic factors play a crucial role in determining healthcare utilization, as financial constraints often limit individuals' ability to access medical services. In many developing regions, including Gombe State, economic hardship affects healthcare decisions, leading to delayed treatments, reliance on self-medication, and increased morbidity and mortality rates (World Bank, 2024).

Gombe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has a high poverty rate, with many residents struggling to afford basic healthcare services. Out-of-pocket healthcare expenses, low-income levels, and inadequate health insurance coverage contribute to reduced healthcare utilization in the state (National Bureau of Statistics [NBS], 2023). Many individuals prioritize essential needs such as food and shelter over healthcare, leading to untreated illnesses and preventable complications (Eze & Yusuf, 2024).

Moreover, economic factors influence the availability and quality of healthcare services. Many public healthcare facilities in Gombe State face funding shortages, resulting in inadequate medical supplies, understaffed hospitals, and insufficient infrastructure. Private healthcare services, although available, remain unaffordable for a significant portion of the population (Adebayo et al., 2024).

This study aims to explore the impact of economic factors on healthcare utilization in Gombe State, identifying key financial barriers to accessing healthcare and suggesting strategies to improve affordability and accessibility.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to improve healthcare services in Gombe State, financial constraints continue to prevent many residents from seeking timely medical attention. High treatment costs, coupled with low income levels, have resulted in increased cases of untreated illnesses and preventable deaths (UNICEF, 2023).

A major concern is the reliance on out-of-pocket payments for healthcare, as many residents lack health insurance coverage. This financial burden forces individuals to avoid hospitals or seek alternative, often unreliable, treatment methods. Additionally, economic factors impact maternal and child healthcare utilization, with many pregnant women unable to afford antenatal care and skilled birth attendants (Okafor et al., 2023).

Given these issues, this study seeks to evaluate how economic factors influence healthcare utilization in Gombe State. The findings will inform policies aimed at improving healthcare affordability and access.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the impact of economic factors on healthcare utilization in Gombe State.

2. To identify key financial barriers to accessing medical services.

3. To recommend strategies for improving healthcare affordability and utilization.

Research Questions

1. How do economic factors influence healthcare utilization in Gombe State?

2. What are the major financial barriers preventing individuals from accessing healthcare?

3. What measures can be implemented to improve healthcare affordability in the state?

Research Hypotheses

1. Economic hardship negatively affects healthcare utilization in Gombe State.

2. High out-of-pocket healthcare expenses contribute to low healthcare service utilization.

3. Implementing financial support programs and expanding health insurance coverage will improve healthcare utilization.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the relationship between economic factors and healthcare utilization in Gombe State, considering both urban and rural populations. It will explore financial barriers, healthcare affordability, and potential policy solutions. Limitations include difficulties in obtaining accurate financial data from respondents and variations in healthcare-seeking behaviors.
